From the very beginning of existence, Yggdrasil, the great ash tree, has floated on the waves of time. At its roots flowed the Well of Knowledge, and there the three Norns tirelessly spun the threads of fate and wove them into a gigantic canvas. Worlds adorned the tree like large fruits: Helheim, the realm of Jord, the goddess of the Earth; cold Jotunheim, home of the mighty giants;

Nibelheim, in whose bowels the dwarf Nibelungs mined gold and silver; Asgard, where the gods lived, and in the middle was Midgard, the world of people. And the most desired and feared treasure in all of Yggdrasil shone on a rock in the midst of the turbulent flow of the mighty Rhine: a lump of gold, a speck of dust from the eye of Ymir. It was guarded by three nymph sisters and an unfulfillable command – only he who sacrificed love could take it in his hand. He uprooted it from his soul. Many had perished because of the passion to possess the Rhine Gold, and not a day passed without a desperate drowning man, because it also promised an immeasurable reward: according to the prophecy, a Ring made by him would rule all the worlds and subordinate them to his will. More than once, the supreme god Wotan sighed at the power that Father Rhine bathed in with its waves.
